Common Household Pests
Rats:
The two types of rats that create the most problems in the United States
are the Norway rat and the roof rat. Each year more than 45,000 people
are bitten by rats. They eat, as well as urinate, on human and animal
food. Rats depend on smell, taste, touch and hearing. They are able to
burrow three feet into the ground and can climb inside pipes that are
only one-half inch to four inches in diameter. They can chew through
such things as glass, cinderblock, wire, aluminum and lead.
Mice:
Approximately 19 days after mating, a female mouse gives birth to
approximately six mice and are then able to mate again in two days. They
can produce six to 10 times a year. Under ideal conditions, she can
produce 2,500 heirs in six months. Mice will set up a nesting site near
sources of food and feed 15 to 20 times a day.
Skunks:
Skunks can be 2.5 feet long and weigh between one and two pounds. They
are active and feed during the night. They are the main carriers of
rabies in many parts of North America. Skunks usually only spray as a
last resort in self defense.
Raccoons:
Raccoons establish dens in trees or in chimneys when their den trees are
destroyed. They are able to easily maneuver past a poorly installed or
fragile chimney cap. They may seek shelter under porches or decks.
Raccoons are very protective of their young and can even tear apart a
roof if one of her young is trapped in it. They are only dangerous when
provoked, trapped or rabid. They are major carriers of rabies in North
America.
Squirrels:
Squirrels often reside in attics or garage ceilings. They are capable of
chewing through many structural materials and are usually unaffected by
repellants. They may enter a home through broken screens, roof tiles and
gaps. They choose their homes based on availability of food sources.
