Common Household Pests
Subterranean Termites:
Each year these termites cause $1.5 billion in property damage to over
600,00 homes in the United States. They feed on books, papers or
anything
containing cellulose. They prefer warm climates and avoid the light.
They
live in underground colonies containing as many as two million
termites. A
queen may lay up to one egg every 15 seconds throughout her life and
live,
along with the king, for 15 years.
Fleas:
There are more than 2,400 species of fleas in the world today. They are
drawn to animals by their body heat, movement and even the carbon
dioxide
which animals exhale. The adults feed on blood; whereas the larvae feed
on
organic debris.
Fleas are commonly found on cats and dogs throughout the year, but
especially during warm, humid weather. The fleas may live on dogs more
than
100 days, which is enough time for a pair of fleas and their offspring
to
produce millions more offspring. A pair of fleas has the potential of
producing more than 20 trillion descendants it one year. Fleas are also
found on opossums, rats, rodents and humans. They are able to transmit
tapeworms from dogs and rodents to other animals and humans. Major
human
diseases such as the plague, murine typhus (acute infection
characterized by
fever and chills, muscle aches and rash) and Bartonellosis (associated
with
cat scratch fever) can be transmitted by fleas.
Fleas are capable of jumping up to 150 times the length of their body.
Silverfish:
Silverfish can be found in homes and buildings through the U.S. They are
small, silver-scaled in appearance and are about one-half inch long with
two antennae projecting from the front and three antenna-like appendages
protruding from the rear. They generally live two to three and a half
years. Silverfish prefer dark, warm, moist areas such as attics,
closets, baseboards and bathroom fixtures. They feed on carbohydrates
and proteins contained in such items as flour, starch, cereal, paper,
drywall and natural fibers such as cotton and linen. They may damage
books, wallpaper, floors and clothes. Their damage is distinguished by
uneven holes in paper and small yellow stains on fabrics.
Clothes Moths:
Casemaking moths and webbing months are the two types that commonly
invade
homes. They can damage clothing, carpets, draperies, pillows,
mattresses, blankets, furs, and wool mixed with synthetic fibers.
Woolens which are stored and not being used attract moths, as is common
during the summer months. They lay soft white eggs in clothing and
furnishings. A single female may lay as many as 100 to 300 eggs.
